INTERVIEW WITH NICOLE KIDMAN ON THE MAKING OF PRACTICAL MAGIC (From Entertainment Tonight) Through the 'Practical Magic' of technology, ET is beaming NICOLE KIDMAN straight from London to you. Nicole discusses her bewitching new romantic comedy and what is was like starring opposite SANDRA BULLOCK for the first time. Plus, Nicole reveals secrets about her relationship with TOM CRUISE. A very personal interview, right here. Entertainment Tonight: This is the weirdest interview I've ever done. How 'bout you? Nicole Kidman: Yes, strange. I'm eating grapes. Sorry. ET: This is an interview for the nineties. Nicole: Yeah, I'm in London, you're in L.A. ET: What time is it there, about 6:30? Nicole: It's about 6:30 in the evening on a Sunday night. My babies are having dinner and I'm working. ET: And you have about twenty more of these to go. Nicole: But you're lucky... you got me early. ET: The fact that your going to all this trouble tells me one thing -- that you really believe in this movie. Nicole: Yes, but I haven't seen it. ET: It's a romp. It's fun. Was it as much fun to make as it looked? Nicole: Yeah it was actually, which is hard to say because usually when you've had a good experience, the movie doesn't look like it was a good experience at all. It's some strange law. But in this regard we had a great time. ET: The four of you ladies were up in the San Juan Islands. Nicole: Yeah. It was beautiful. ET: Now were you the wildest four ladies in town? Nicole: We weren't that wild. We had one night where we drank tequila but we were really well behaved. Isn't that a bummer? I should say that we were the wildest things to ever hit the island but I don't think we were. Nicole: (Laughs) We did have a lot of fun. SANDY [BULLOCK] and I would have a lot of fun. ET: So when you were drinking tequila, you actually had a camera filming it and it was put in the movie? Nicole: Nah. We shot it and pretended we were drunk. After we shot it we really got drunk! Kind of weird. ET: So what were you drinking when you were shooting the scene? Nicole: We were drinking water. But then I said, "After this we have to drink shots of tequila and we have to do this job." And DIANNE [WIEST] and STOCKARD [CHANNING] and Sandy all went, "Okay, let's go!" ET: So who's the best drinker of the bunch? Nicole: Well, I'm Australian, so... I would not be doing my country proud if I said that I wasn't. I would have to say I was the best drinker. ET: Speaking of Australia, do you celebrate Halloween down there? Nicole: Yeah, but not in the same way that you do in America. We're aware of it but not where you go around trick or treating. ET: How about in London? Nicole: No. It's the same. ET: So come Halloween, you're not going to take the kids and go trick or treating? How do you celebrate? Nicole:: Yeah, they do. They dress up and we set it up so they can go to a couple of houses. And we get a couple of other kids to come over. We kind of fake it. They don't know the difference. ET: What are they going to be this year? Nicole: I'm not quite sure. ET: Do you believe in magic? Nicole: I think I believe in fate. I believe in strange coincidences and I suppose being in the right place at the right time and luck. So whether you want to call that magic or not, I don't know. I think that certain things in life you just can't control they just happen. ET: The movie has some interesting themes. One of those is how allusive love can be and how that's one thing you all want in your lives. I couldn't help but think how lucky you, Nicole, must feel in your life for having found a true soul mate. Nicole: Yeah, of course. I think whenever you have somebody that you want to share the rest of your life with then you are incredibly lucky. I've got so many friends that are still searching. It's nice. It's like you've got a best friend and someone you want to share it all with. ET: For the millions of viewers that watch our show, what makes it work for you and Tom? Nicole: What makes it work? I just think he's my favorite person in the world. It's nice to be able to say that after nine years of being together. ET: I read that you said one of the sexiest things about him was that he made you laugh. Nicole: Yeah. ET: What does he do? Nicole: No... It's just the way he is. The things he does. His strange little quirky behaviors. I don't know, I'm embarrassed. He just makes me laugh. ET: I just ask because you two are lucky and everybody sees that. People that don't have what you have, want to know how to get it. Nicole: I don't know. Luck. ET: "The Blue Room" is quite a triumph for you, wouldn't you say? Nicole: It's been fantastic. It's been a lot of work. It's been so gratifying the way the London theater community has really supported me and been so nice to me. ET: Are you going to bring it to Broadway? Nicole: They want us to bring it to Broadway. At the moment, I'm so caught up with the play here. Unlike a film where once you've done all the work it's gone, on a play, that's where the work starts. Every night you have to put on a performance. We're putting on eight shows a week. You have to keep trying to make it fresh and rediscover it. Dealing with even two weeks ahead is even hard. I would love to be able to work on Broadway. I'm very proud of the play and would love more people to be able to see it. ET: You're doing eight shows a week for scale but you're a big movie star. Why are you doing this? Nicole: Because you're an actor. You want to do good work and I was offered the play. Whether it's 250 pounds a week or it's a million dollars it doesn't matter. It's the work. It's so gratifying working on something you believe in. ET: Thank you very much. |
