You know you've been watching 'Practical Magic' too often when you are actually familiar with some or all of the following mix-ups... *laugh* I personally only noticed a few, and the rest have been gathered from various sources. I've analyzed whether or not these mistakes exist, and if so, in what form. If you know of any other mistakes or goofs, and would like to share, please let me know. Enjoy!

MISTAKES
After Sally marries Michael, and is reading the letter about her perfect life to Gillian, we see Sally & Michael with their two girls. Sally says, 'Today is our third anniversary,' but the girls are already older than three years of age. (sent in by Charlotte, charlie_bug@yahoo.com)
Did Sally have her girls before she was married? More likely, this was a mistake.
During this scene where the sisters are bringing Jimmy back to life, they chant 'Mighty Hecatate (pronounced Heckuhtate) make it right', where any witch worth his/her salt can tell you that the Goddess is actually Hecate (pronounced Heckahtay or Huhkahtay). (sent in by Greg, aromagregory@aol.com; also by Bonnie, RiderB@msn.com)
Like Greg, I had noticed this mistake before. But I was unsure whether this was a script mistake (perhaps it was spelled wrong), or just the actresses' lack of familiarity with the triple goddess. :) Either way, they had a witch as a consultant on the film, and she should have caught that mistake.
The end credits misspell the name of the town of Coupeville, Washington (whom the producers thank). They leave off the first "e."
Oops. The same mistake occurs in the production notes.
CONTINUITY

In an early scene where the young Sally and Gillian are walking up to the Aunts' house, the girls shown are the ones that play Sally's daughters and they're wearing velvet dresses. When they reach the Aunts, the film shows the young girls that are actually playing young Sally and Gillian and they're wearing sailor type school girl uniforms.
A mistake, and fairly noticeable at that. Different clothing, as well as different heights.

In the same scenes, where young Sally & Gillian, and young Antonia & Kylie are walking up to the Aunts' house, the Aunts are wearing the same clothing and hair in both instances, despite the years that are supposed to seperate these two events. (sent in by Laura S, shules1324@yahoo.com, http://peaches.isgreat.net)
This may be related to the above mistake, where the same footage was evidentaly used in both instances.

When Gillian asks her boyfriend for his pocketknife so the sisters can cut their palms, if you watch closely you will notice that the boyfriend is already getting the knife out of his pocket before Gillian asks for it.
Is he psychic? Probably not. *grin* This is a mistake in continuity.

When Sally and Gillian do the "blood sisters" pact, it is Sally's left hand that gets cut, but later, when she is depressed about the death of her husband, she looks at the scar on her right hand.
Not a mistake - in both scenes it's Gillian's right hand and Sally's left hand which is cut/scarred.

In the earlier scene, when Gillian is leaving they cut their hands and place them together. Gillian hugs Sally, but there is no sign of the blood on Sally's shoulder.
A mistake, or very fast-drying blood.

In the scene where Sally is chasing the beetle on her bedroom floor, her hand slams down to squash it and she is wearing red fingernail polish. In the scene before and after that, she has no polish on.
This is a mistake. On a side note, if you watch frame by frame, after the beetle drops between the cracks there is editing to the footage of the hand slapping down (barely noticeable, a slight jumpin the frames). Perhaps to be sure she didn't actually squish the beetle, but still make it look like she came close?

When Sally goes into her shop, she is wearing a skirt and black shoes; when she comes out because she hears the children chanting outside the store, she is wearing a pair of white socks.
I am not sure about this one - not only are the socks different, the entire outfit it different. Peossibly it was originally meant to be two seperate days, or they just made a mistake.
When Sally and Gillian are getting ready to bring back Gillian's boyfriend from the dead, they are going to put him on a counter that has towels and other items on it. The camera shows them picking him up and putting him on the counter, and when they do, the towels and items are all gone, without having been cleared.
This is a mistake; I noticed it in the theater.
After placing the boyfriend on the table, Gillian unbuttons his shirt and cuts his undershirt. In the next shot of Jimmy, his undershirt is uncut and shirt is buttoned up.
Definitely a mistake.
In the scene where Sally and Gillian are bringing the boyfriend back to life, they use whipped cream to put a star on his chest... and on the final line of the star, you see the line that she was following... which they hadn't drawn on first.
Hmm... maybe they drew it on when the camera wasn't on them? Sally does say 'I need you to give me something white to write on top of the star.' Perhaps they should have shown them drawing it to make it flow smoother, but I don't think it was a mistake.
During the Phone Tree meeting Sally wishes harm on a woman who's talking about Gillian. When the woman flinches after her notebook catches her thumb, you can see Gillian's hair pushed back behind her ears. When they show a close up of her and Sally right afterwards, Gillian's hair isn't behind her ears and looks like it never was.
This is a mistake, but it goes by so fast I'm surprised anyone ever noticed. It is actually the split-second when the binder actually closes.
When Gillian and Sally are arguing in the kitchen after the syrup incident, Sally's necklace first has its clasp in the front, then presumably in the back for the very next shot.
For some reason I noticed this the first time I saw the movie.
When Sally is in the hotel room with Detective Gary Hallett, her hair is first behind her ears, then not, then behind her ears again in rapid succession. (sent in by Annie, roedhunt@qwest.net)
This seems to be a frequent occurence in the film for both Sally and Gillian - it must have been difficult keeping track of all that hair!
When Sally is being interviewed by the detective in his hotel room, he states the date as March. Didn't her daughters just attend the Solstice celebration with the Aunts? Wouldn't that put the date more like June? (sent in by Jaime, WiccadWahine@aol.com)
Absolutely a mistake. I had noticed this before, but had assumed that Aidan Quinn was using the date when the movie was filmed, rather than when it was supposed to be set. The summer solstice (presumably what the celebration was for) would have been around June 21.
Along with the point above: Gary mentions the date - March 8 - when he records Sally's testamony at his hotel. Anyone who lives in New England knows that folks aren't running around without coats in March. There may be an occasional early spring day, but even on the coast, it is not consistently warm enough for light sweaters and tank tops. (sent in by Barb)
Makes sense to me! I assume that they were aiming for the summer solstice (around June 21), since everyone wore lighter clothing, and the weather was generally lovely in the movie. And this wasn't really the case, since the behind-the-scenes shots of the filming consistently had the stars wearing coats when not on camera. :)
After Sally leaves Detective Gary Hallett's hotel room, we see him leaning on the bed post wearing a white shirt (he is still wearing it at the house later), where before he was wearing a striped shirt. He couldn't have had time to change. (sent in by Gabrielle, gabrielle_constantin@hotmail.com)
Another continuity mistake - like the one with Jimmy's shirt earlier.

Sally is talking on the phone when she is calling another mother on the Phone Tree.
I don't see that there is a mistake here. She is not actually shown dialing, just pointing at the name of the person whom she just dialed and is now speaking to.

When the women gather for the coven, Sally is standing next to Aunt Jet in the first shot. In the next and subsequent shots Sally is standing next to Aunt Frances.
This is a mistake; I noticed it in the theater.

When the girls are small (Sally & Gillian) the aunts do a love spell for a lady wanting her married lover to leave his wife. Notice that, years later, when they form a circle to try and banish Jimmy from within Gillian, that same lady is in the circle, not having aged a bit? And that is roughly 10-15 years later? A mistake or not? (sent in by Vanessa, vanessas@petech.ac.za)
Well, I have to assume that this was a mistake, because it is certainly there. Perhaps they forgot to age the actress, or did a poor job of aging her.

In the scene where all of the women come to form the coven to drive the ghost out of Gillian, all of the women are standing holding the brooms. When Gillian gets up and rushes at them, all of the brooms are on the floor, and the women are standing back from them. Next scene, they are holding the brooms again.
I don't think this is a mistake. Sally says, 'Stop it, you're killing her.' Although we don't actually see them put the brooms down we can assume they did, because when Sally kneels on the floor before Gillian gets up, the brooms are already on the floor (as they are when Gillian gets up), and they are also not holding the brooms again in the next shot.

In the scene where the coven is standing around Gillan Trying to rid the spirit from her, if you watch carefully, in the background to the right, behind Stockard Channing (Aunt Frances) you will see a piece of the wall open and shut. This happens when everything is shaking and rattling around. You can see it twice, it is quick so watch carefully. I think it was there to cause the paintings hung on the wall to shake. (sent in by Amber, babydoll4u2keep@yahoo.com)
It's true! I'm sure we've all noticed this one. I figured it was a mistake, but frankly couldn't think of what it was supposed to be. Amber's explanation makes sense, though. :)
In the scene with the women in the coven, when Jimmy is finally exorcised from Gillian, there are two seperate flashes of light. (sent in by Sam, crusty_milk@hotmail.com)
This is true. I don't know if it is a mistake, bad editing, or artistic license. :)
