Here are some of the most frequently asked questions. If you have another question not answered here, please contact me.

What does Amas Veritas mean?
Amas Veritas is (somewhat bastardized) Latin, and translates as (approximately) 'True Love'. A fitting name for a site devoted to this movie, as well as for young Sally's spell.

Where was Practical Magic filmed? Where is that house? Are there blueprints available?
Practical Magic was filmed on a stage set in Los Angeles, CA, USA (interior scenes), and at Friday Harbor, in the San Juan Islands, Washington state, USA (exterior and some interior scenes), as well as Coupeville, Washington (the town of Maria's Island). The house was created for the movie, and built on Friday Harbor. The house was mostly just a shell, and some of the key sets (such as the Conservatory and the Kitchen) were then transported from Los Angeles to Washington for further filming. I have heard that after the filming, Warner Brothers tried to sell the home (to be transported), but there were no offers. Since it was built on park land, it was torn down and the park was returned to its original condition (or better). I have also heard that the tower and the conservatory are still on Los Angeles somewhere - but that could just be rumor.

03/01 I sent off for information, and if any is given to me, I'll be sure to put it on the site.

10/01 Well, as of now, I still have had no word on the blueprints/house. I've just tried yet again to find information, and will hopefully get a reply soon. As always, if I hear anything, it will be posted on the site.

1/04 These are the best scans I have of the plans and elevations. Please note: I cannot copy or otherwise reproduce the elevations or floor plans. This is a promise I made when the images were sent to me to share on the site, so please respect that request.

I've herd rumors of a Practical Magic television series?
A pilot for a possible television series is in the works (as of 2004), for CBS and Warner Bros. television. For more information, go here.

What about Nicole Kidman/Sandra Bullock/Diane Wiest/Stockard Channing's hair/clothes?
Unfortunately, I do not know too much about these aspects of Practical Magic. I can tell you that all that gorgeous hair is mostly wigs and extensions - but you probably already knew that. I plan to try to gather more information on the sources for these items; for now, here is some information on the style of Gillian, Sally, and the Aunts.

Why are there two different composers for the Practical Magic score?
Well, I don't know the exact story, but it goes something like this (of anyone knows better, please let me know) - Michael Nyman wrote the first score (background) for the movie Practical Magic. Two of the tracks, Maria Owens and Convening the Coven, are available on advance and early copies of the Practical Magic soundtrack. For whatever reason, the powers that be were not happy with the score (though judging from the two songs it was excellent), and they asked Alan Silvestri to step in. Mr. Silvestri then composed the score (with little time to spare) that is found in the movie today. Two of these tracks, Practical Magic and Amas Veritas, can be found on the newer copies of the soundtrack. The differences? I haven't heard the full Nyman score (don't I wish I could get my hands on a copy of that!), but it seems to me that Nyman's score was more modern and interpretive, while Silvestri's is lighter, haunting, and beautiful. I like them both! I think that the Nyman score would have had a big effect on the overall feel of the movie, though - the Silvestri score fits the house and mood so perfectly.

What about the Book of Shadows?
What can I tell you? I don't really know anything, except it's great, and I wish I had one just like it. I hope to find out more about the Book of Shadows, and if I do, it will end up on the site.
In June/July of 2001, there was a Warner Brothers auction which included a prototype of the Book of Shadows.

Why are there two different dates on the Practical Magic posters (or other promotional material)?
The original release date for the United States was supposed to be October 9, 1998, but for some reason unknown to me, it was changed to October 16, 1998 (the actual release date). Some of the original promotional material (posters, postcards, etc) have this original date, but later reprints reflect the actual release date.

When will the Amas Veritas web site be finished?
Your guess is good as mine! I really don't know. As I find new information and such, the site will continue to expand. It will probably never be finished!
