CBS makes deal for hour-long drama about sisters who do magic

(Variety) - CBS and Warner Bros. TV are conjuring up some "Practical Magic" with Sandra Bullock, Denise Di Novi and scribe Becky Hartman-Edwards.

Eye has pacted with WBTV, Di Novi Pictures and Bullock's Fortis Films for an hourlong drama that will revolve around two sisters who struggle with the blessing/curse of magical abilities. Hartman-Edwards ("American Dreams") will exec produce and write the pilot, which will be based on the Griffin Dunne novel that served as the inspiration for the 1998 Warner Bros. feature "Practical Magic." Pic starred Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens.

Bullock and Di Novi, who produced the feature, will serve as exec producers of the CBS project, which has been given a premium script commitment with penalty attached. Di Novi exec produces the Eye drama "The District," while Bullock is exec producer via Fortis Films on ABC's Warner Bros. TV-produced fledgling hit "George Lopez."

Hartman-Edwards said she hopes the skein will end up as "a new way of doing a family show," with the focus on the two sisters as well as two other generations of Owens women.

"I'm very lucky to be working with Sandra and Denise, who did the movie and so understand the characters," Hartman-Edwards told Daily Variety. "The book is so rich, and there are so many stories and fantastic character dynamics that it was impossible to capture all of it in a movie. Should we go to series, we can tell these stories over time and further delve into who these characters are."

In addition to her work on "American Dreams," Endeavor-repped Hartman-Edwards wrote last year's NBC pilot "Spy Girl." Her other credits include "Sex and the City," "Jack & Jill" and "Leap of Faith."

Deal was put together by Cliff Gilbert-Lurie.
